How Long Does Shipping from China to the USA Take? — American Global Freights

It’s probably the number one question we hear: how long does it take to ship from China to the USA?

The short answer: about 2-5 weeks by sea, 3-7 days by air. But the real answer depends on a few things. Let’s walk through it.

Ocean Freight Transit Times

Most goods from China come to the US by ocean because it’s the most affordable option. Here’s how long it takes from the major Chinese ports:

To the West Coast (Los Angeles / Long Beach)

Origin PortTransit Time
Shenzhen (Yantian)14-17 days
Guangzhou (Nansha)15-18 days
Shanghai12-15 days
Ningbo12-15 days
Qingdao14-17 days
Xiamen14-18 days

To the East Coast (New York / New Jersey)

Origin PortTransit Time
Shenzhen28-35 days
Shanghai25-32 days
Ningbo25-32 days

East Coast takes longer because ships either go through the Panama Canal or around the southern tip of Africa.

To Other US Ports

  • Savannah, GA — 25-30 days from South China
  • Seattle / Tacoma — 11-14 days from Shanghai
  • Houston, TX — 28-35 days from South China

But Wait — That’s Just the Ocean Part

The transit times above are port to port. Your total shipping time from factory door to your warehouse is longer. Here’s what the full timeline looks like:

StepTime
Factory to Chinese port (trucking)1-3 days
Port handling and loading in China1-3 days
Ocean transit12-35 days (depends on route)
US port unloading and customs2-5 days
Trucking to your warehouse1-5 days
Total door-to-door17-51 days

For a typical shipment from South China to a warehouse near Los Angeles, the realistic total is about 3-4 weeks door to door.

Air Freight Transit Times

When you need things fast, air freight gets it there in days, not weeks:

RouteTransit Time
China to Los Angeles2-4 days
China to New York2-4 days
China to Chicago3-5 days

Add 1-2 days for customs and local delivery, and you’re looking at 4-7 days total door to door.

Air freight costs more — usually 4-6 times the price of ocean — but it’s worth it when time is money.

Rail Freight (A Middle Option)

If ocean is too slow and air is too expensive, there’s a third choice: rail freight via the China-Europe-US corridor or intermodal rail within the US.

  • China to US West Coast by ocean + rail to inland cities — the ocean part takes 14-18 days to LA, then rail moves your container to places like Chicago, Dallas, or Atlanta in 5-7 more days
  • Total: about 20-25 days to inland US cities

This is often cheaper than trucking cross-country from LA.

What Can Cause Delays?

Even with the best planning, things can slow down. Common causes:

  • Port congestion — when too many ships arrive at once, your container waits in line
  • Customs holds — if your paperwork is incomplete or your goods need inspection
  • Weather — typhoons in the Pacific, storms at US ports
  • Holidays — Chinese New Year (January/February) shuts down factories for 2-3 weeks, and ports back up before and after
  • Peak season — August through October is the busiest time, and everything takes a bit longer

How to Speed Things Up

A few things that help your shipment move faster:

  1. Get your paperwork right the first time — wrong documents are the number one cause of customs delays
  2. File your ISF early — the Importer Security Filing needs to be submitted at least 24 hours before the ship leaves China
  3. Work with a forwarder who has people in China — our Foshan office handles the origin side so nothing falls through the cracks
  4. Have your customs broker ready before the ship arrives — don’t wait until the last minute to set up clearance
  5. Book early in the week — containers that arrive on Monday or Tuesday clear faster than Friday arrivals
